Sweets Review: Fried Oreos at Fried Treats (Area 600)

If you’ve never had a deep fried oreo before, do yourself a favor and head down to Queen’s Cookery to try one post haste. After being deep fried, the oreos are warm and soft, creating a sublime flavor in your mouth. Be warned though, they are quite rich! You may wish to split an order between family or friends.

On the note of deep fried treats, we do so hope that they deign to bring back the deep fried twinkies and snickers. The twinkies in particular were a favorite of mine. Deep fried junk food is not a dietary staple, but faire is a holiday, after all, so you just have to spoil yourself.

Restaurant Review: Dragon's Den

One of the two sit down restaurants at MIRF, Dragon's Den is located near the entrance just behind the maypole. It’s $16 for a plate and drink.

Also available at each restaurant is a kiosk with mixed drinks. You can walk up to the kiosk to order a drink, but they are available to restaurant diners as well. However, the boozy drinks are NOT available as part of the meal and you will need to order them separately. The rum beverages seem to be a standard this year and they get a thumbs up from me, matey. They also offer a margarita and blackberry lemonade (spiked, I assume?).

The meals themselves are large and easily shareable between kids or people with smaller appetites. The quality is also usually pretty good. You’re not going to find anything super gourmet that blows you away, but you should be able to get something that’s filling and pretty decent.

Let’s start with my favorite: the lobster mac & cheese.

This macaroni and cheese is pretty solid. The bits of shredded lobster are a nice addition. This is usually my go-to when visiting this restaurant.

Next we have the Guinness pot roast. This was advertised as having mashed potatoes, but we got a plain baked potato on the bottom instead. It was topped with chunks of pork roast, topped with fried crunchy onions. Corn casserole was the side.

The pot roast itself was edible but nothing too special. Of course, everything is helped by gravy, and there should have been more of that. The corn casserole was pretty bland and the texture was off, like there was too much flour added.

Finally, we tried the meatloaf. A generous portion of meatloaf slathered with what is described as a “tangy” sauce, rested atop garlic red skinned mashed potatoes. The sauce was good and there was plenty of it. Again, corn casserole on the side.

The restaurants are nice because it gives you a chance to sit and many seats shelter you from any weather or sunlight. My favorite spot is the front of the Dragon’s Den, facing the main entrance. You get to see people coming in through the main entrance gate and the maypole is right there, so you may catch the village dancers performing.

Overall, the menu is pretty decent. The food tends to be fair to good and the portions are generous.
